We wheeled baby David down the hallway late morning June 12th to the mother and baby room like this and freaked out the nurses at their station. They thought we had a very mature baby boy to be sitting up in his cradle like that. Ha!

June 12, 2010 - David Scott's Arrival!

To continue on with my story from my June 21st post...

I went to bed Friday night, June 11th feeling "normal" and wondered, yet again, if "tomorrow" would be the day I'd go into labor so I could hold my second son in my arms.

I woke up at 4 a.m. Saturday and made my second (or was it third?) trip to the restroom - a normal occurance for a full-term pregnant lady. I experienced a really hard contraction that seemed to last over a minute long. I took note, looked at the clock, and went back to bed. Sure enough, 12 minutes later another contraction occurred. I rolled over (which wasn't easy, mind you!) and woke up Matt telling him I thought I was in labor, but that I wanted to wait to see if a third contraction came before I officially would "call it." Matt decided to get out of bed and move to the living room couch to watch part of the World Cup soccer match that was about to start. He gave me instructions to knock on the adjoining wall if I had another contraction. And sure enough, 12 minutes later another contraction happened, I knocked on the wall, and made it official ("yes, I'm in labor, this is the real thing") with Matt.

I laid in bed for a little longer, but I was too excited. I had to wake up my Mom shortly after 5:00 a.m. in our guest bedroom (also where Jay sleeps in his crib) to tell her I'd be having a baby TODAY (finally)!

By 5:15 Matt had called his parents in Oregon to tell them to make their way and asked them to call Matt's sister and family who also live in Oregon to let them know the news, too. Matt then walked into the bedroom and asked me to hop in the shower before we took off for the hospital. I willingly agreed, but little did I know that the contractions would start to come every 8 minutes. And by the time I got out of the shower and was blow-drying my hair while Matt showered, they were coming 4 minutes apart! Yikes!

We left the condo shortly after 6:00 a.m. - with Grandma Amy in the kitchen with 2 year old Jay making french toast (he was totally into the whole process and hardly noticed Matt and I depart, thank goodness). I'm so thankful we live so close to the hospital. I remember how uncomfortable the car ride to the hospital was when I was in labor with Jay, and once again, how uncomfortable I was sitting in the car in labor with David. THANK GOODNESS it was early in the morning on a weekend so the timing of the traffic lights was quick! I was so very thankful for that. About 5 minutes into the drive I decided to time my contractions again. I knew the nurses would ask Matt that question upon arrival so I wanted him to be prepared and know. Ugh - 2 minutes apart now!! We parked in the hospital parking garage (again, thankful for it being the weekend since they have FREE parking all day Saturday and Sunday) and not 15 steps into the walk from the car to the elevator, I had a really hard contraction, tossed my cookies (into a bowl I had brought along with me in the car thankfully), and made my way up to the labor and delivery floor.

The nurses got me situated, asking me all the health questions while getting me hooked up to the IV (since I had tested positive for Group B strep). One of the questions was whether or not I wanted an epidural. I told her that I was okay for now, but that I might change my mind later. She then checked me after being at the hospital maybe 15 minutes. I learned I was already dialated to about 9-1/2 cm (with 10 cm being the time they want you to push)! Good thing I was good with a natural delivery! (I delivered Jay naturally, too.)

My sister arrived in the labor room around 7:00 a.m. (she is my "push" coach and Matt is my spouse/moral support coach). Less than an hour later I was fully dialated and they told me I could start to push. My water still had not broken, which was good since it was protecting little David from the potential exposure to Group B Strep. My water broke after my third push, the pediatricians and the delivery doctor showed up, and about 3 to 5 pushes later, David came!

David arrived at 7:58 a.m. (less than 4 hours after I woke up at 4 a.m.) with dark olive skin, a healthy bright red complexion, dark brown hair, weighing in at 7 lbs, 14 oz. and 20-1/4" long.

My Mom arrived at the labor room with Jay around 9:00 a.m. Jay was glad to see us, but acted shy when he first arrived in the room. It was very cute. He quickly warmed up to the situation and really cared less about seeing us (Mom and Dad) -- he wanted to see his baby brother! Following the introduction and some cuddle time with Mom and Dad, Jay got to open up his gift from baby David...a baby brother doll. (You'll see it in some of the pictures that follow.)

Days of Waiting

I'm going to go back in time - about 2 weeks time to be exact - to start the story of David's arrival.

My due date with Baby W #2 was Saturday, June 5. As I mentioned in a previous blog post, I had some nauseousness and fairly regular contractions on Friday, June 4. They were regular enough to call in reinforcement (my sister Molly) that morning while Matt went to work. I was afraid that if the contractions started to come more frequently...well, I just didn't want to be alone with 2 year old Jay in hard labor waiting for Matt to arrive, etc. Molly graciously came and spent a better part of that day here. Unfortunately the contractions didn't come closer together. In fact, they became further apart and eventually stopped and became very infrequent. But the "signs" were enough for my Mom to hop in her vehicle to make the 3-1/2 hour drive here to be with us.

I had a check-up and a non-stress test on the baby at my doctor's office on Tuesday, June 8th, followed by another check-up and non-stress test on the baby the following Friday, June 11. All signs looked great - my body was completely ready, it was just a matter of waiting to see when the baby would make his arrival. At the Friday, June 11th appointment an ultrasound, non-stress test, and check-up was scheduled for Monday, June 14 and an induction was put on the calendar for Friday, June 18 at 6 a.m. if Baby W #2 decided to wait that long.

It was a LONG week of waiting, let me tell you. My family kept close tabs on me, wondering if I was having contractions (I was, but nothing regular) and every day we all hoped that "today" would be the day! Lots of little projects got accomplished around the house in our waiting...a few walls received a touch-up coat of paint, my kitchen pantry closet received new shelves and therefore much better storage, the patio deck got a cleaning, lots of various errands were accomplished...you get the idea.

Friday night, June 11, after dinner, Matt suggested we all go for a walk. That sounded good to me, but I suggested THEY all go for a walk while I took the car to get a pedicure. That plan sounded even better to me! Ha! But Matt's suggestion that I walk with them won out in the end and we all took a LONG walk that evening. A 1-1/2 hour walk to be exact! I'm sure it could have been accomplished faster, but I slowed the gang down with a) my nearly 41 week (overdue) pregnant waddle and b) needing to stop now and then when a hard contraction took place.

Funny how memories flood back. Two years ago I remember Matt suggesting another long walk on a sunny, Sunday afternoon, two days before my due date with little Jay. Little did I know that at midnight Monday morning I'd be having my first labor contraction and a little over 14 hours later I'd be holding my first born son in my arms.

Stay tuned for David's arrival story...

Blog Absence

Hi family and friends!

Sorry for the absence since baby David entered this world last week. I've just been soaking up all this family time with Dad Matt, big brother Jay, and my Mom, Grandma Amy. I'm sad to report that my Mom returned home today so for the next couple of weeks we are "on our own." I'm HAPPY to report our terrific friends in our Sunday School class have organized meals for us to come every other day for the next several weeks. WHAT A BLESSING!!

I don't have the time at the moment to post pictures (I hope to write some blog posts this week to catch everyone up). But if you want a sneak peek at a good portion of our day last Saturday (with pics and videos), check out my sister-in-law's blog posts.

Arrival of David Scott

The Worthington home has grown by another two feet!

Our second son, David Scott was born on Saturday, June 12, 2010 at 7:58 a.m. weighing 7 pounds, 14 ounces, and measuring 20.25 inches long.

Jay is very excited about being the big brother. Mindy is doing very well after 4 hours of laboring (3 at home and 1 at the hospital) and is recovering at Overlake Hospital here in Bellevue, WA (only 5 minutes drive from where we live). She hopes to be released from the hospital in about 24 hours.

My wife is truly amazing for many reasons. For example, David was feeding 45 minutes after his birth. He's got dark black hair and has a much louder cry than his older brother Jay.

Forgive the blurring iPhone picture.

Baby #2's Due Date - TODAY

As my blog post title says, today is my due date with Baby #2. So far...nothing! I'm still at home and I'm feeling great.

I must confess I did have some nauseousness yesterday morning followed by regularly spaced 15 minute cramps that then drifted to 20 minute apart cramps by mid-day, followed by intermittant/almost non-existant cramps by the end of the day. (A bit of a bummer for all of us, but obviously it wasn't his time yet!) The ensuing possibility of real labor happening was enough for my Mom to make the 3-1/2 hour drive to our place. She'll be staying with us through birth and for the first full week after the little guy's arrival. What a blessing! Jay is loving the extra one-on-one time with Grandma.

I sure enjoyed and soaked up the terrific family time and the beautiful weather we experienced today in the Seattle area. I walked quite a bit today while out and about doing errands at IKEA, Target, Home Depot and we ended the evening with a nice family walk to the park after dinner.

So, the question of the day and week...when will this little guy decide to make his arrival? Only God knows and I'm just fine with that. I'll be seeing my doctor on Tuesday, June 8 for my weekly check-up, so it'll be interesting to see if I see him there or at the hospital before then. As I've been looking at the calendar, a 6-8-10 birthday would be kinda cool to have, don't you think? Ha!

I'm not super uncomfortable and really, when you think about it, it is much easier to care for a newborn INSIDE than it is for the first few weeks and months following their delivery, so as far as I'm concerned, he can continue to stay cozy, well fed, and cared for a little while longer as long as he and I are doing fine and are healthy.

Hopefully the next blog post I make in the next week or so will be news and pictures of the little guy. Stay tuned!!

Jay's 2 Year Well Check

Today was Jay's 2 year check-up at the pediatrician's office. Here are his latest stats.

Today's Weight: 25.6 lbs. (10th-25th percentile) - he has always been a lightweight

Today's Length/Height: About 35-1/2 inches (75th percentile)

Today's BMI (Body Mass Index): 14.2

Jay sure took this Mom by surprise last night. The boy turns 2 and it seems he literally "grew up" overnight on me! He woke up at 3:00 a.m. and didn't want to go back to sleep. His diaper was fine, he had his favorite toys with him in the crib, I explained to him it was still "night night" and tried to get him to lay back down to tuck him in, etc. He eventually obeyed, but then he'd wake up 15 minutes later and I have to get back up and start over again. Finally I'd "had it" when the clock said 4:30 a.m. He kept pointing and insisting I sit or lay down in his room on the recently set-up twin over full bunk bed next to the crib. I explained for a third or fourth time (I remind you - in the middle of the night!) that the bed isn't Mommy's bed, that it was Jay's "big boy" bed. And then a lightbulb went off for me and I asked, "Do you want to sleep in your big boy bed?" He respectfully nodded yes to me and his whole body language told me, "You finally got it, Mom." So without hesitation and without a word, I picked him up out of his crib, pulled back the covers, and tucked him into the bed. I left the room and there was no fuss. I was in SHOCK. I stayed awake in my bed expecting a fuss or cry at any moment. At 5:00 a.m. I got out of bed because I was just so CURIOUS and sure enough, he was fast asleep. I promptly went back to bed and I know I quickly fell asleep. At 7:30 a.m. I heard Jay stirring and found that he had gotten out of bed on his own and was out happily playing in the living room with his new birthday gifts. What a turkey!!

Jay's Development Progress:
  • Runs! Also walks up and down stairs holding rail or a hand.
  • Scribbles with a crayon, creates "pictures" and shows them to you by saying, "Ta da!"
  • Kicks and throws a ball willingly - enjoys playing "with" someone else.
  • Shares his toys with other kids - brings them toys he thinks they'd enjoy playing with, etc.
  • Enjoys rough-house playing (with Daddy since Mommy really can't do that being so pregnant)
  • Enjoys "helping" around the house
  • Sings
  • Dances
  • Loves to look at pictures and photos and points asking, "Who/what's dat?"
  • Enjoys going through tunnels when we're out and about (Interstate 90 has some good ones on the way into Seattle)
  • Loves all the typical "boy" things - trucks, cars, trains, tractors, buses, fire engines
  • Likes stickers and enjoys placing them on Mom/Dad approved items
  • Gives terrific hugs and kisses
  • Enjoys going to bed with at least one book and several toy train cars

2 Years Old

Hard to believe, but two years ago today I was at the hospital and gave birth to this terrific boy!

I purposely did not plan a party this year not knowing when Baby Boy #2 will be making his arrival. Perhaps a lame excuse, but it is a valid excuse none-the-less, right?

At 10 a.m. this morning I had my 39-1/2 week check-up with my labor and delivery doctor. I'm progressing along just fine, but from indications the doctor's best guess is that I probably wouldn't deliver baby brother today. It is nearly 8 p.m. and so far he is right! It really could happen any time now. The day he'll arrive is anyone's guess. The doctor suggested I make my 40 week check-up appointment early next week, so I'll visit him again next Tuesday morning, June 8. That is, if I don't go into labor and delivery before then. Because it was Jay's birthday today the nurse gave Jay his choice of TWO stickers. Pretty cool!

I asked Jay after he woke up from his afternoon nap if he wanted Mommy to make cupcakes. Of course he enthusiastically said, "Yes!" I gave him a choice of yellow cake, chocolate cake, or devil's food (the three cake mixes I had in my pantry) and he quickly pointed to the chocolate one and helped me mix up the batter.

After Jay finished his dinner, Daddy got home from work, and after a fun phone call from family in Texas, I put two candles in a cupcake and Matt and I sang "Happy Birthday" to him. Here is a photo of him in the midst of us singing to him.
Here is a video snippet following Jay blowing out his candles.

And another video of us trying to get Jay to take his first bites of the cupcake...

The results when he was "all done" with his dessert.
Following dessert he opened up a few gifts from family and friends. The first is a video of him opening his gift from Aunt Traci, Uncle Keith, and cousins Samantha and Sydney.

Here is part one of opening his gift from Uncle Scott and Aunt Mandy.

Here is part two of opening his gift from Scott and Mandy.

And lastly here is a series of photos as he opened up his Fisher Price Doodle Pro gift from our friends Nathan and Katie. We gave the same/similar gift to their 2 year old daughter Audrey a couple weeks ago. It was such a hit they returned the favor of the great gift. Perhaps Jay will slow down on needing blank paper and his crayons for a little while now that he can use this gift.

More birthday gifts are to follow from family in the coming days (when much of the family plans to come for baby brother's arrival). I'm thankful we can spread out the birthday gifts, giving him more time to focus in on a few at a time.

Thanks for all the terrific gifts today! Although low-key, Jay had a terrific birthday today.
